Local Walks
A number of mountain and lakeside walking routes start directly from the Forest Side, including Helvellyn, Fairfield Horseshoe, Langdale Pikes, and other low level routes beside Rydal Water and Grasmere Lake.
Barney's Newsbox, on Broadgate, in the centre of Grasmere has many local walk leaflets to choose from and below are just a small selection of our favourites.
Grey Crag, Alcock Tarn, and Butter Crag
This is a circular walk. Ordnance Survey – Explorer OL 007 (The English Lakes - South Eastern area). Distance: 3.5 miles / 6km. Duration: 2-3 hours. Height gained: 130ft / 40m Terrain: Reinforced paths for much of the way.
Easdale Tarn, Sergeant Man, High raise and Helm Crag
This is a circular walk. Distance: 4.4 miles / 7.4km. Duration: 3-4 hours. Height gained: 295 metres.
Fairfield
From Grasmere onto the Stone Arthur ridge, following the Good Ridge via Great Ridge to the summit of Fairfield, Dove Crag, High Pike, Low Pike, High Sweden Coppice, Nook End Farm, back through Rydal, on to Wordsworth's Dove cottage and then back to Forest Side.
Loughrigg Fell
Loughrigg is centrally placed for almost the whole of the southern Lake District and is deservedly one of the most popular fells. Loughrigg was a favourite walk of Dorothy and William Wordsworth when living at Grasmere and references to the fine views can be found in their diaries and writings. Duration: 2hr 30min, Distance: 4.6 miles / 8km. Height gained: 335m / 1099ft. OS Grid: GR 347051.
Helvellyn
The third highest peak in England. Height: 950 m / 3117ft. OS Grid: NY 342151.
